The most recent class of the FDNY Officers Management Institute (FOMI) is well underway and its participants are developing focused projects, which are aimed at improving the Department’s policies and strategies.
FOMI was established in 2002 and is funded by the FDNY Foundation. The program was developed based on a recommendation in the McKinsey Report done in the wake of September 11th. FOMI aims specifically to continue to make the FDNY more resilient and stronger by giving high-ranking officers a solid foundation in management principles and leadership strategy.
“FOMI has truly been instrumental in the rebuilding of this Department,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro. “We are so grateful to the Foundation and its partners for their support of this program that continues to be a great source of strength as we move forward.”
Classes take place at the General Electric Leadership Training Center in Ossining and each class is selected through an internal application process. Candidates are selected by the Fire Commissioner, the Chief of Department, Chief of EMS, Chief Fire Marshal and Chief of Staff.
The six-month program is offered through the Columbia Business School and includes instruction from educators at Columbia, NYU, Wharton and the University of Pittsburgh, as well as business leaders from corporations like General Electric.
This class includes four Deputy Chiefs, four Battalion Chiefs, six Captains and two Supervising Fire Marshals.
The FDNY Foundation is funding this year’s program thanks in part to a generous grant from the Motorola Foundation. Participants in this session are working on projects ranging from better utilizing social media to enhance situation awareness and decision making, as well as to disseminate information to continuing to build a more cohesive Department by creating more opportunities for joint Fire and EMS training sessions.
“Our generous supporters allow us to fund important programs like FOMI,” said FDNY Foundation Executive Direction Jean O’Shea. “This is one of the tangible ways we are truly supporting the FDNY in their efforts to build a stronger Department and ultimately, to keep New York City safer.”
To date, 211 officers have graduated from FOMI. To support critical FDNY initiatives through a gift to the FDNY Foundation, please click here.
