FDNY Foundation Congratulates FOMI Graduates
The FDNY Foundation joins the FDNY in congratulating the newest class of the FDNY Fire Officers Management Institute (FOMI). The graduation ceremony took place at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn on Thurs., June 15.
“This program is one of the many ways that the Foundation uses the funds it receives to better protect this city,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro. “FOMI began from a tragedy. But this program took that unimaginable loss and turned it into something which makes our members safer and more prepared each year. The benefits of this program are felt at every level with previous years’ projects improving the equipment our members use, the safety of our response, and the ability to manage a Department of this size.”
FOMI was established in 2002 and is funded by the FDNY Foundation. The program was developed based on a recommendation in the McKinsey Report done in the wake of September 11th. FOMI aims specifically to continue to make the FDNY more resilient and stronger by giving high-ranking officers a solid foundation in management principles and leadership strategy.
“FOMI has helped prepare us to be better managers and to think outside of our comfort zone,” said Battalion Chief James Ahrens. “On this job, you can encounter many situations that are out of the norm and we learned how to manage them efficiently through the skills and techniques taught.”
“FOMI is important to the mission of the FDNY because it joins senior leaders within areas of the Department, and City government, and creates a synergy between them,” said Deputy Chief Stacy Scanlon. “This ensures that the FDNY will always be prepared to serve and protect the citizens of New York. As FOMI graduates, we are able to share what we’ve learned with other members in our charge, to teach and guide the next generation of leaders of this great Department.”
The six-month program is offered through the Columbia Business School and includes instruction from educators at Columbia, NYU, Wharton and the University of Pittsburgh, as well as business leaders from corporations like General Electric.
This class included six Battalion Chiefs, eight Deputy Chiefs and two Supervising Fire Marshals. Participants in this class completed projects focused on how the FDNY mentors and coaches rising officers, the impact on population, demographic, zoning and building changes on FDNY response resources, planning for hazards related to gas and transition and long-term planning.
“The FDNY Fire Officers Management Institute has been recognized as one of the best programs in the country and is one of the most tangible ways we are able to support the FDNY in its mission to stay at the forefront of emergency response,” said FDNY Foundation Board Chairman Stephen Ruzow. “We congratulate this 15th graduating class and thank each member for their dedication to building a stronger Department.”
There have been more than 200 FOMI graduates since the program’s inception.
