All Stars from the worlds of sports, television, and the arts came together with longtime friends of the FDNY and business leaders to support the Department and mark the 17th anniversary of September 11th at the annual FDNY All-Star event on Thurs., Sept. 13.
“… All these years later, during this week that is always so incredibly difficult for us in the FDNY, the teams, athletes, and entertainers here are joining us once again to support the FDNY in a different way,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro. “The FDNY Foundation funds programs that teach fire safety and CPR to hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers each year, and invests in the training of all FDNY members – helping to make them even safer as they do the dangerous work of protecting our city. By being here this morning, you’re standing with us once again, and, as we were all these years ago, we are grateful for your friendship.”
“Thank you to all of our celebrity friends for being with us today, for taking time out of your busy schedules and continuing to be such amazing friends and supporters to the FDNY,” said FDNY Chief of Department James Leonard. “The teams in our city and the many sports leagues actors, actresses and countless other all stars have all shown support to the FDNY over the years. You have supported us in the days after September 11th, and you are still here today. We are all huge fans and appreciate you remembering the members of the FDNY today and in the past through your actions.”
FDNY Foundation Chairman Steve Ruzow reflected on the important reasons everyone gathers at this yearly event, “We will never forget the brave 343 members of the FDNY we lost on 9/11 seventeen years ago, the over 180 FDNY members who have died since due to WTC illness, and the many FDNY members who continue to battle illness still today.”
The event was hosted by Bruce Beck, the lead sports anchor at WNBC-TV, also the host of Sports Final, NBC 4’s popular Sunday night sports show.
Carol Alt, Tina Cervasio, Jeff Curtin, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Famke Janssen, Sukanya Krishnan, Rod Strickland, and Charles Way were among the celebrities who turned out to honor the anniversary and the members of the FDNY, as well as to support the FDNY Foundation.
The All-Star event is one of the highlights of the year for the FDNY Foundation. Support from the Foundation allows the Department to fund awareness and outreach programs, fire and life safety education, and FDNY member training, new technology and equipment.
“This event brings us together to mark a somber anniversary, but also to celebrate the bravery of the men and women of the FDNY, and the support the Department has received from so many. We work tirelessly to make sure the FDNY has the funds they need to help its members keep New Yorkers safe” said Bob Zito, Vice Chairman of the FDNY Foundation.
