December 23, 2019The new FDNY Rockaway Tactical Training Facility, which was funded by the FDNY Foundation provides FDNY firefighters with essential ongoing training they need to help them save lives. “The Rockaway Tactical Training Facility will allow members to train on forcible entry door simulators, ladders, hose stretches, rope training platforms, a mask confidence course, and a reconfigurable search area which can be made to replicate a private dwelling configuration, apartment layout, or commercial building layout.
Having this facility will have a major positive impact by reducing the out of service time of fire units from the Rockaways and surrounding areas. Prior to having this facility, Rockaway units would need to travel to Randall’s Island to receive training. Due to lengthy travel times, fire units would be out of service and away from their response areas for upwards of five to six hours. Now, when units train at the Rockaway Tactical Facility, they would be out of service for less than an hour and could be put back in service immediately if a large scale emergency occurred in the Rockaways or adjoining areas,” says #FDNY Chief Brian Fink, who was involved in the opening of the FDNY’s second satellite tactical training location in Rockaway, Queens. Chief Fink says, “Rockaway Tactical will help the community by having trained firefighters who will be available more often to respond to fires and emergencies that occur in the area. This new training facility is a welcome and positive addition to the Rockaway region.”
