The FDNY and FDNY Foundation Urge All New Yorkers to ALWAYS CLOSE THE DOOR when Escaping a Fire and to Place Space Heaters at Least Three Feet Away from Combustibles

The FDNY and FDNY Foundation urge all New Yorkers to always close the door when escaping a fire. Closing the door isolates fire and prevents smoke, heat and flames from spreading to hallways and stairs. When escaping a fire in an apartment, be #FDNYSmart- CLOSE THE DOOR as you make your exit. Closing the door Saves Lives.

For more information about Closing the Door, please visit: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/fdny/education/fire-and-life-safety/public-service-announcements.page

Please see the video below to ensure households remember to always close the door.

Also remember to place Space Heaters at Least THREE Feet Away from Combustibles.

Combustible materials such as blankets, curtains and newspapers can easily catch on fire.   Be sure to keep these types of materials at least three feet away from space heaters.

  • Turn off space heaters when you leave the room, house, or go to bed.
  • Do not leave space heaters unattended.
  • Only use equipment that has the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) mark which shows that the product has been safety tested.
  • Turn off the space heater if the cord becomes hot.
  • Plug space heaters directly into the socket instead of into an extension cord.
  • Place the heater on the floor and never on a counter top or on furniture.
