August 11, 2022This summer, the FDNY Foundation proudly sponsored a college fair attended by active Firefighters, Fire Officers, EMTs, Paramedics, Communication Dispatchers and Fire Protection Inspectors who may qualify for the Department’s tuition reimbursement program, another initiative made possible by the FDNY Foundation.
“Education is critical – whether it’s career advancement for our frontline first responders or preventing fires in communities across the city. I want to thank the FDNY Foundation for being a sponsor of the Department’s college fair and for being a supporter of education in all areas of the FDNY,” said Acting Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh.
Each year, the FDNY Foundation provides scholarships to nearly 200 uniformed members for college courses related to health and fire science. To date, the FDNY Foundation has funded more than $2 million in scholarships for Firefighters, Paramedics, and EMTs.
“I applaud the FDNY Foundation for providing support and opportunities so our members can advance their education,” said FDNY Chief of Department John Hodgens. “Obtaining or continuing degrees in higher education while doing the important work of protecting lives and property in New York City is no easy feat. However, it is a worthwhile endeavor. It benefits the FDNY by having a highly qualified pool of candidates for promotions, who will become the next generation of leaders within the Department.”
The college fair was held over the course of three days from July 26 – August 3, 2022, at the Bureau of Training as well as FDNY Headquarters. It was comprised of representatives from participating colleges to advise on degree programs, college options, course enrollment, financial aid and scholarship programs.
