FDNY Foundation Congratulates 154 Probationary EMTs on their Graduation

June 11, 2024

The FDNY Foundation congratulates the 154 Probationary EMTs who graduated today from the EMS Academy. For the past 16 weeks they have worked to learn the skills needed to save lives and successfully meet the high standards of patient care in the FDNY. They are a remarkable group and we wish them the best of luck in the FDNY. We thank them for choosing a career of service and commitment to protecting the people and City of New York, and proudly representing the FDNY. We would also like to acknowledge and thank the 11 military veterans who graduated. Also in this class are 14 members of the FDNY’s Youth Alumni Program. The FDNY Foundation proudly supports this wonderful program.

“Becoming an EMT is truly a noble calling. It takes a special kind of person to always be ready to provide medical care in some of the toughest situations imaginable. Alongside a highway, in the middle of a storm, at the scene of a fire. You have to overcome unpredictable challenges because as a first responder there is no such thing as a textbook case. It is those moments when your training and your quick decision-making skills will be critical in achieving the very best outcomes,” said Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh.

“You are not just EMTs, you are the best, the most dedicated first responders that our city has to offer. The timing of your graduation could not have been more crucial. The call volume for medical emergencies in our city is at an all-time high, with our EMTs and paramedics responding to an astonishing 4,700 emergencies every single day. This year alone we are on track to hit 1.7 million calls for help. And now you are being released onto the streets of New York, ready to face these challenges head on. But remember as you go out into the field that you are not alone. You have been trained by the best of the best, equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle whatever comes your way. Together, you will make a difference in the lives of countless individuals,” said Chief of EMS Operations Chief Michael Fields.
