FDNY Foundation Joins AccuWeather to Encourage New York City Families to “Be Ready”

The FDNY Foundation has joined together with the FDNY and AccuWeather, the global leader in weather information and digital media, to encourage New York City families to prepare for the upcoming holidays and winter weather.

The Foundation, in partnership with AccuWeather, held “Be Ready” Day across New York City on Nov. 22, 2016. The day was designed to ensure New Yorkers are prepared and safe during the holiday season.

“The cold winter months pose many challenges for our Department, as some New Yorkers may use unsafe means to keep warm, and the harsh elements make the brave work of responding to fires and medical emergencies that much more difficult,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “Fire Safety Education is especially important as the temperature drops, and the efforts of the FDNY Foundation and our great friends at Accuweather to spread these critical safety messages this winter will surely save lives.”

“AccuWeather proudly supports the FDNY Foundation in a shared life-saving mission that will increase public awareness of fire and weather safety,” said Barry Lee Myers, Chief Executive Officer at AccuWeather. “Together, by helping more people to be prepared, we will save more lives.”

“The FDNY Foundation is so proud to partner with AccuWeather to keep New Yorkers safe,” said FDNY Foundation Chairman Stephen Ruzow. “Together, we are preparing New Yorkers for the winter season ahead, making sure they are aware of all of the hazards that the season brings, and helping to make sure they’re taking the necessary precautions to keep themselves safe. Partnerships like these are so critical because they allow us to reach so many people and we know, these educational messages are saving lives across the city.”

As a part of the life-saving partnership, AccuWeather donated $25,000 to the FDNY Foundation to support fire and life safety education awareness and outreach initiatives, including the Foundation-funded Fire Zone, the FDNY’s state-of-the-art learning center of teachers, parents and children, located at Rockefeller Center.

Additionally, AccuWeather teamed up with the Foundation to educate New York City school children in a special “Be Ready” Day presentation focused on preparedness and fire and life safety information. Students from the Bronx were taken through live, interactive demonstrations at the Fire Zone to learn more about the top causes of fires in New York City, as well as how winter weather can contribute to fire hazards. AccuWeather Network Meteorologist Laura Velazquez participated in the school tours alongside FDNY Fire Safety Education Director Anthony Mancuso.
