September 18, 2015FDNY Foundation Marks Anniversary of Sept. 11 Terrorist Attacks
The FDNY Foundation joins the FDNY in marking the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that killed 343 members of the FDNY.
On the 14th anniversary of the attacks, FDNY members attended ceremonies across the city to honor the lives of those killed that day, including the annual reading of the names at the 9/11 Memorial, as well as a ceremony at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn.
“The FDNY Foundation, its Board of Directors and its supporters, are privileged and humbled to honor the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice on that tragic day by continuing to ensure the FDNY is better trained, better prepared and better equipped than ever before,” said FDNY Foundation Board Chairman Stephen Ruzow. “The members of this Department honor their lives and legacy by carrying on their work and we are grateful to be able to help this great Department prevent fires and save lives.”
The 343 members of the FDNY who died on Sept. 11, 2001 had more than 4,400 years of experience between them. Each year, the Foundation honors their heroism by helping to fund ceremonies held across the five boroughs.
On Tues., Sept. 8, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro added the names of 21 members of the FDNY who died of illness related to their work in the rescue and recovery effort to the World Trade Center Memorial Wall at FDNY Headquarters. 110 total FDNY members are now listed on the wall, which was unveiled in Sept. 2011.
"The FDNY Foundation, its Board of Directors and its supporters, are privileged and humbled to honor the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice on that tragic day by continuing to ensure the FDNY is better trained, better prepared and better equipped than ever before. The members of this Department honor their lives and legacy by carrying on their work and we are grateful to be able to help this great Department prevent fires and save lives."
