May 19, 2021FDNY Foundation Joins FDNY to Mark CPR and AED Awareness Week
May 28, 2021On Monday, May 24, the FDNY Foundation presented new surf boards to FDNY Engine328/Engine264/Ladder134 in Rockaway, Queens. These live-saving pieces of equipment were donated to each of the 16 Surf Rescue Companies FDNY has throughout the city. FDNY Lieutenant Anthony Romano, Water Rescue Unit, says, “This particular firehouse has three companies that are also considered Surf Rescue Companies. They have a higher level of training because of the proximity to the ocean. These new boards are state of the art and perfect timing since we are about to begin our summer season. FDNY responds to hundreds of water emergencies a year and most of our rescues occur when lifeguards aren’t on duty. Our Firefighters will use these boards to paddle out to people who are too far from the shore. We also do a lot of training which involves year round water rescue and surf board training.”
The FDNY and FDNY Foundation urge all New Yorkers and visitors to our great city to take precautions when swimming both in pools, and in the 520 miles of water surrounding this city. Remember that lifeguards are there for your protection, and you should swim only when they are present. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings, and never take unnecessary risks.
