FDNY releases new PSA during historic period of brush fires across New York City

In a newly released Public Service Announcement (PSA), the FDNY and FDNY Foundation are urging New Yorkers to follow Safety Tips to help reduce the risk of brush fires following an historic two-week stretch of the rapidly-spreading fires.

During the time period of Oct. 29, 2024, to Nov. 12, 2024, the FDNY responded to 229 brush fires citywide—the highest amount in a two-week period in New York City history.

“Remarkably dry conditions in October and so far in November have resulted in an historic amount of brush fires over the last two weeks, and we need the public to remain vigilant,” FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said. “Due to a significant lack of rainfall, the threat of fast-spreading brush fires fueled by dry vegetation and windy conditions pose a real threat to our members and our city. I want to once again urge New Yorkers to follow these important safety tips to reduce the chances of a brush fire occurring during this extraordinarily dry period.”
